Declining hepatitis C (HCV) incidence in Dutch MSM

Two prospective studies of treatment of acute hepatitis C recruited patients in 17 Dutch HIV-centers. The centers include 76 % of the HIV positive MSM population in the Netherlands. In 2015, direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for HCV became available to all Dutch HCV-infected patients with a rapid treatment uptake in HIV-positive patients. The incidence of acute HCV in 2014 was compared to the incidence in 2016. 93 infections were observed in 2014 compared to 49 infections in 2016 (11.2/1000 PYFU vs 5.5/1000 PYFU). This represents a decline of 51 %.

Comment: The dramatic decrease in HCV may indicate that HCV elimination could be possible with free availability of DAAs, at least in well-defined groups like MSM with HIV, but perhaps also in the wider HCV population.
